Game 28: February 6, 2010 Dimond 0 vs. West 2 Wasilla Sports Center Blake Mendenhall leads West to first ever State Championship as he shuts out the Dimond Lynx. They Lynx bombarded Mendenhall early but could not shot, kick or throw a puck past the senior goalie. Dimond held the puck in the West zone for nearly the entire first period and had an 11-0 shot advantage before West managed a dump in shot on Dimond goalie Henry Rubey. West had a few late chances in the first period as the shots ended 12-5. The second period was a little more equal as West managed to get their offense on track scoring the game winning goal off a dump in that hit the back wall and bounced in front allowing Jack Petrino to be the hero with 2:01 remaining in the second period. The Lynx continued to play great hockey as Mendenhall denied them time after time. Rubey was solid in goal for the Lynx and kept the game at 1-0 until 6:00 remaining when West Logan Miller rifled the puck off the cross bar and the right post before Rubey covered it. The clang of the cross bar was clear, the goal judge turned on the light followed by the referee signaling a goal for a 2-0 lead. The Lynx argued the puck never went in and video evidence in inconclusive. Only an overhead camera or a little CSI frame by frame zoom will prove if the goal went in or not. This cost the Lynx a few minutes of momentum but certainly did not cost them the game. The Lynx continued to press and pulled Rubey with 1:10 remaining but could not get the puck past Mendenhall. This was a great game and finished with a wild celebration for the West Eagle players, coaches and fans. The Lynx cranked up the offense last night in their first round matchup against West Valley while East took two overtimes late last night to sneak by Wasilla. East also beang t and tied Dimond during the Cook Inlet Season so this game looks like a great semi final clash. The teams skated to a scoreless first period as East Jeff Thomas turned aside 8 shots and Dimond Henry Rubey made 4 saves. The East Thunderbirds scored first as Ryan Luiten skated end to end on the powerplay and wristed a 40 footer past a surprised Rubey in goal. The Lynx picked up the pace after falling behind and Austin Brown tipped in a Mason Anderson shot for a powerplay goal at 8:20 of the second period to forge a 1-1 tie. The Lynx held a 20-13 shot advantage after two periods bt the scopre was knotted at 1-1. The Lynx picked up the pace in period three out shooting East 13-6 but neither team could score. East seemed content to sit back an ice the puck while floating Luiten at center ice hoping for a breakaway. This allowed the Lynx offense several great scoring chances. With the game tied at 1-1 the Lynx looked like they were on a powerplay out shooting East 7-0 in the first overtime period. With the score still tied at 1-1 the East Thunderbirds were happy to see the Zamboni come out to resurface the ice. The Lynx wasted no time in the second overtime getting a quick shot on Thomas who froze the puck. With the faceoff in the Thunderbird end, Dimond junior Kyle Clapper won the draw and Daniel Roberts fired a backhander between the legs of Thomas for a LYNX WIN! Dimond will now play the West Eagles who have already advanced to the State Championship game. The Anchorage Fire Dept. responded and Shamburg was taken off the ice on a stretcher suffering from headache, neckache and dizziness. The game resumed about 30 minutes later but the Lynx never recovered. No penalty was called on the hit although video replay confirms charging, elbowing or head contact all could have been called.
