The Cougars have struggled a little early with penalty trouble as they try to find their identity and the Lynx have steamrolled to seven straight wins out scoring the opponents 64-7. Both teams had a few early chances before Senior defenseman Solomon Mabry gave the Lynx a 1-0 lead at 9:41 of the first period. The Lynx defense had a small hiccup as Service Karson Frisk was left unchecked down the left wall and beat Jordon MacMillan to the short side. With the score now 4-1 the Service fans tried to rally the team as the crowd became louder. The Dimond Senior class responded as Kiel Kenning made it 5-1 assisted by Seniors Jordan Hall and Moloney with under a minute remaining in the second period. The Lynx held a 17-5 shot advantage after two periods of hockey and a 5-1 lead. The third period was more Lynx offense as Christian Hausinger and Bauer added goals early in the period for a final margin of 7-1. The Lynx Senior heavy team seems bigger and faster than the rest of the Cook Inlet teams. Stay tuned as the Lynx will meet the "Dark" side South Wolverines in early December and the Service Cougars again on December 21 before winter break. Dimond Goalie: MacMillan 8 saves Service Goalie: Fritz 18 saves ****************************************************************************** Game 9: November 19, 2012 Dimond 13 vs. Eagle River 2 McDonald The Lynx scored early and often against a hard working Eagle River Wolves team on the way to a 13-2 win. The senior heavy Dimond Lynx team extended their winning streak to 36 straight dating back to February 11, 2011 when they lost a 2-1 heartbreaker in the State Semi Finals to the Service Cougars. The Lynx whipped the East Thunderbirds in the State 3rd place game the next night and have not lost a game since then. Andrew Shields started the scoring at 12:50m of the first period redirecting a Dawson Glover shot to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later Josh Larson snapped the puck top shelf assisted by Tyler Andrews. Both teams exchanged scoring chances and Dimond sophomore goalie Darin Hammingh had to make two big saves to keep Eagle River off the board in the opening period. Senior Tyler Garcia then rifled the game winning goal with under a minute remaining in the first period assisted by Kiel Kenning and Christian Hausinger. The Lynx out shot the Wolves 8-2 in the period. Eagle River first year coach Bill Comer must have made a statement to his team as the Wolves came out flying in the second period and Carter Jesiel cut the lead to 3-1 just 0:23 seconds into the second period. The Lynx responded like they have each time this season when they have given up a goal and exploded the offense scoring four straight goals to lead 7-1 after two periods. The East Thunderbirds under new Head coach Brice Christianson played a clean, well structured defensive game and held the Lynx off the board until 10:46 of the second period when recent University of Alaska-Fairbanks commit dove to knock in a rebound and a 1-0 Dimond lead. East used several icing calls and long line changes in an effort to slow down the speedy Lynx who play four lines and wear down the opponent. East also has Owen Carlson in goal who had an excellent game until the middle of the third period when he left the game nursing a groin injury. Lynx defenseman Hamilton Walker made it 2-0 at 7:28 of the second period and it looked like East was rattled and ready to give up. Carlson made a few more big saves and held the Lynx off the board the rest of the period. With the Lynx leading 2-0 staring the third period Josh Larson made it 3-0 at 13:17 firing one high past a screened Carlson. The Lynx were then whistled for back to back penalties for an interference and a hold giving East a two man advantage for almost a full minute. The Lynx penalty killers did a great job and Larson was rewarded at 8:51 scoring his second goal with a shorthanded backhand shot off a great pass from Ben Heafer. The Lynx out shot the Thunderbirds 43-9 in the game. Dimond Goalie: Hammingh 9 saves East Goalie: Carlson 34 saves/Oldham 5 saves ****************************************************************************** Game 11: November 30, 2012 Dimond 14 vs. Kenai 0 7:15 pm McDonald The bigger, stronger, faster, older Dimond Lynx took care of business early firing 21 shots on net in the first period and scoring four goals. Scoring tonight by Lines: (Heafer Line) Ben Heafer 2 goals/4 assists, Josh Larson 1 goal/ 2 assists and Brandon Sakumoto 2 goals/1 assists. (Bauer Line) Lane Bauer 3 goals/1 assists, Kenny Hausinger 1 goal/3 assists and Joel Tomuro 1 assist. Dimond Goalie: Bigelow 6 saves Kenai Goalie: Alvex 50 saves ****************************************************************************** Game 12: December 1, 2012 Dimond 9 vs. Soldotna 1 Boeke The visiting Soldotna Stars coming off a tough 1-0 loss to Service last night gave the Lynx all they could handle for two periods keeping the game close at 3-1 Dimond. Then The Lynx turned on the offense and scored six third period goals for a 9-1 final score. Lynx top scorer and Alaska-Fairbanks recruit scored just seven seconds into the game as Kenny Hausinger streaked down the right wall and hit Bauer with a goal mouth pass and a quick 1-0 lead. They left the game beaten and confused how they let the game slip away in front of a sell out crowd at a very cold Ben Boeke arena. The Lynx dominated the first period taking a 2-0 lead with a power play goal by Senior Captain Tyler Andrews and a short handed breakaway goal from Senior Kenny Hausinger. The tempo of the game changed in the second period when the Lynx were whistled for three straight penalties. The Lynx penalty killers did a great job on the first penalty however, South scored just two seconds after the Lynx returned to full strength. The amount of energy used by the Lynx defense and penalty killers took a toll and South converted a power play goal by Cameron Klatt to tie the game at 2-2. The Lynx penalty killers were already shorthanded with Senior Ben Heafer sitting out a game disqualification and defenseman Greg Pfeifer nursing an injury from the East game. The amount of energy used to kill penalty after penalty against a team like South made the difference in the third period. The Lynx did respond quickly after the Klatt goal as Senior Tyler Garcia took a stretch pass from Andrews up the middle and scored a breakaway goal at 1:51 of the second period to give the Lynx a 3-2 after two periods. The Lynx looked like they had regained control in the third period peppering South Goalie Nathan Wright with 14 shots but coming up empty. Dimond was again the victim of unbalanced penalties taking seven in the game to only two for South. With the Lynx clinging to a 3-2 lead and just over two minutes remaining South junior and leading scorer Steven Orizotti found a loose puck in front of the Lynx net and buried his 14th goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3. Then with just 1:48 remaining South defenseman Tyler Onstott fired a slap shot from the blueline past a screened Lynx goalie for his 1st goal of the season and the winning goal ending a great run by the Dimond Lynx Hockey Program.......What's next for the Lynx? Totals to be determined soon. The special game jerseys would be auctioned off after the game. The Senior heavy Lynx were focused.....................and it showed. Just six seconds into the game the Lynx shocked the crowd and the Cougars. Lane Bauer won the face off and passed to Kenny Hausinger who streaked down the right boards passing back to Bauer just inside the blueline. Bauer then slid a backhanded pass to Joel Tomuro who fired it top shelf for a quick 1-0 lead. Line combinations keep changing but the scorers keep scoring and the push toward a league title continues. Senior Kenny Hausinger scored twice and dished out three assists giving him 49 points on the season. Kenny now is tied with Lane Bauer as the Lynx scoring leader and will pass him next game as Bauer recovers from a lower body injury that may end his season. Again the Lynx gave up the games first goal at 7:33 of the first period when Todd Hallsten scored a power play goal. The Senior heavy Lynx did respond with a power play goal of their own at 5:08 with Hunter Garris firing a wrist shot from the blue line past a screened West Valley goalie Matt Taylor. The Lynx continued to pressure and were rewarded again at 7:22 in a goal mouth scramble as the puck bounced off Hausinger skates for a 3-2 Dimond lead. The Lynx managed only 5 shots of Service goalie Dustin Fritz who they have beaten twice this year already by a combined score of 13-2. The Lynx did decide to play about mid way thru the second period and out shot the Cougars 15-3 in the period but Fritz and the Cougars had the confidence to handle the pressure. The third period was more of the same until the Lynx took a penatly and the Cougars made them pay. Kirby Graff buried the power play goal at 8:36 giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead. The Lynx lost their regular season final to South. The Lynx then beat Chugiak to qualify for State and then promptly lost the Region semi-final game to Service 2-0. The Lynx recovered the next night to hammer West in the third place game. So this year the Lynx enter State with just a one game winning streak. The Lynx lost top scorer Lane Bauer at Christmas to an injury and have juggled lines ever since to find the right balance of scoring and grit. Senior goalie Jordon MacMillan has played the majority of games this season with Senior Aaron Bigelow and Sophomore Darin Hammingh both getting time and wins for the Lynx. The West Valley Wolfpack earned the #1 seed from the Mid-Alaska Conference and played the Lynx tough in mid January losing 3-2 behind a 44 save performance from goalie Matt Taylor. The Lynx would need a good effort for the noon game and they got just that. From the opening puck drop it was all LYNX. Dimond new offense won the opening faceoff and held the puck in the West Valley zone almost the entire period out shooting West Valley 20-2 in the first period. It took almost twelve minutes to score as the Lynx worked hard cycling the puck and looking to solve the West Valley goaltending. Drake Glover struck gold with 3:15 remaining in the period for a 1-0 Lynx lead. The play started with a reverse pass from Walker Hamilton to Christian Hausinger behind the Lynx goal. Hausinger fed Josh Larson on the half-wall who hit Drake Glover streaking up the middle creating a 2 on 1 with Kenny Hausinger. Glover on his off wing looked like he would pass to a streaking Kenny Hausinger but instead rifled the puck short side high past the glove of Matt Taylor as the water bottle jumped of the top of the net. The Lynx small crowd of fans erupted and the bench went crazy as they knew the pressure to score was now off. Then with 0:41 remaining in the first period Senior Kenny Hausinger made it 2-0 Lynx. Hausinger buried the puck as he skated left to right across the crease after receiving a pass from Drake Glover. With the Lynx leading 6-0 after two periods and outshooting the Wolfpack 41-3 the game was all but over. The Wolfpack did not give up and played the Lynx tough in the third exchanging goals for the 7-1 final score. Senior Solomon Mabry back from injury scored at 12:30 assisted by Aidan Tielborg and Tyler Garcia. West Valley ruined the shutout bid for MacMillan at 7:13 when Mason Graves scored. The Lynx will now head for lunch and a nap in preparing for tomorrows semi-final match up vs. the Service/Soldotna winner at 5:30 pm Dimond Goalie: MacMillan 14 saves West Valley Goalie: Taylor 44 save ******************************************************************************** Game 27: February 8, 2013 Dimond 7 vs. Service 2 Wasilla The 2013 State semi-final …..Just another CAT fight…………… The Lynx still feeling the effects of last week’s Region semi loss to Service by a 2-0 score felt revenge was in order. The senior heavy Lynx came ready and Dawson Glover led the way with a nifty goal from just behind the goal line at 7:52 of the first period. The Lynx were buzzing at the net with Ben Heafer and Dawson Glover having several chances to bury the rebound. Glover grabbed the puck and headed behind the net but decided to chip the puck off a sprawling Service goalie Dustin Fritz for a 1-0 Lynx lead. Heafer and Walker Hamilton earned assists on the goal. The Cougars enjoyed the first power play of the game but suffered the consequences of the Lynx new penalty killing combos. A full out, full speed, no holds barred assault………….The Lynx Josh Larson showed his speed and skill scoring shorthanded at 5:13 to give the Lynx a 2-0 lead. The second period heated up as both teams exchanged big hits and scoring chances and the Lynx took charge scoring twice for a 4-0 after two periods. Aidan Tielborg scored on a breakaway at 12:42. Tielborg streaked between the two defenseman and used his body to shield the puck faking left then right sliding the puck into the back of the net, making it 3-0 Lynx. Brandon Sakumoto took the life out of the Cougars making it 4-0 at 1:48 with an unassisted blast from the high slot after picking off a Service break out pass. The Lynx continued to improve their game in the third period and Senior Captain Tyler Andrews made it 5-0 at 10:12 with an unassisted goal. The game became a little chippy after that and the Lynx coaches made sure a few players understood the rules and the consequences to bad behavior. The Cougars Andrew Cummings made a great individual play to score shorthanded at 9:42 of the third period to make it 5-1 Lynx. Dimond senior Kiel Kenning made it 6-1 at 8:39 with a power play goal assisted by Dawson Glover and Christian Hausinger. This is Dimond 7th State Final in the last 9 years and South 6th……… The game would not disappoint the sold out, standing room only crowd at the Menard Sports Center in Wasilla. The game was also streamed live by the “Stream Team” from Hutchinson High School in Fairbanks. The DVD is available at www.dimondhockey.com The Wolverines struck first at 13:31 of the first period when Cayden Cahill crossed the center red line and dumped the puck in on Dimond goalie Jordon MacMillan. The puck took a South bounce and found its way up and over MacMillan and a 1-0 South lead. The South bench and standing room only crowd went crazy. The Lynx used their one and only timeout to stop the momentum that South may have gained. The Lynx quickly showed their resolve and scored at 12:43 when Christian Hausinger fired a wrist shot past a screened South goalie Nathan Wright. Brandon Sakumoto and Aidan Tielborg assisted on the goal. The Lynx crowd increased the volume and the players felt the energy. Senior defenseman Solomon Mabry stepped up at the center red line and laid a big check on a South player receiving a pass. Mabry’s shoulder placed directly into the chest of the South player knocking him on his back as the crowd noise was deafening. The Lynx headed up the ice with the puck only to hear a whistle and see a back official signaling a head contact penalty. With the score tied 1-1 and South dangerous on the power play the Dimond penalty kill units needed to be their best. The three different units the Lynx used were awesome and held the Wolverines to one shot on net. Just 0:05 seconds before the South power play expired South Gavin Lubin took an interference penalty that would give the Lynx a power play. The Lynx having gained momentum from the penalty kill quickly made it 2-1 Dimond with 9:37 remaining in the first period. Senior Dawson Glover notched the power play goal with a rebound shot over a sprawling Nathan Wright. Joel Tomuro and Ben Heafer earned assists on the goal after digging the puck out of the corner and battling to the front of the net. The Lynx continued to press and take over control of the game and Joel Tomuro made it 3-1 Dimond at 5:22. Dawson Glover carried the puck through the neutral zone and beat the defense with a great move and slid a late pass to Tomuro for an easy backhand tip in. The first period ended with Dimond leading 3-1 and out shooting the Wolverines 15-9. Dimond knew a 3-1 lead was not safe against South after a December loss with the Lynx giving up two goals in two minutes late in that game. The Lynx were ready and quickly made it 4-1 at 14:48 as Josh Larson sniped a goal assisted by Tyler Garcia and Tyler Andrews. With the score 4-1 with just 0:12 seconds gone in the second period South decided to change goalies bringing in senior Ben Simpson to stop the momentum. The Lynx greeted him with a shot just 0:20 seconds later as Jordan Hall made it 5-1 Dimond assisted by Kiel Kenning and Marcus Moloney. While the Lynx were cruising along at 5-1 they must have forgot there was still over twenty nine minutes remaining in the game. South came roaring back with two quick goals cutting the lead to 5-3. Cayden Cahill notched his second of the game at 11:38 assisted by Jared Cruz. Then at 9:03 Cruz scored his own goal assisted by Daniel Haider and Cahill. The score now with Dimond ahead 5-3 and 9:03 remaining in the second period was not over. South outshot the Lynx 12-10 in the second period. The period break came at a good time for the Lynx. The break allowed them to refocus and put a lid on the momentum that South gained in the second period. Once again it was a Lynx senior that stepped up and sealed the win. Ben Heafer made it 6-3 at 10:50 scoring with assists from Dawson Glover and Tyler Andrews. With the 6-3 lead a safe lead the Lynx could enjoy the last ten minutes and started to dominate the game physically. The Wolverines pulled Simpson in a last ditch effort. Dimond senior Dawson Glover picked off a South clearing pass and fired it into the empty for the 7-3 final score.
